|Intestinal parasites (helminthes): Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used in the treatment of single or mixed intestinal parasites (helminths). It is effective in the treatment of Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm/threadworm), Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworm), Taenia spp. (tapeworm) and Strongyloides stercoralis.
Giardiasis: Albendazole is used in the treatment of Giardia (duodenalis or intestinalis or lamblia) infections in children.
Hydatid disease: Albendazole is used in the treatment of hydatid disease (echinococcosis) of the liver, lung, and peritoneum caused by Echinococcus granulosus (dog tapeworm). It is also used as an adjunct to surgery of hydatid cysts, either preoperatively or postoperatively, to reduce the risk of recurrence due to operative spillage.
Neurocysticercosism: Albendazole is used in the treatment of parenchymal neurocysticercosis caused by the larval form of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm).
Strongyloidiasis: Albendazole is used in the treatment of strongyloidiasis caused by Strongyloides stercoralis.
Cutaneous larva migrans: Albendazole is used in the treatment of cutaneous larva migrans (creeping eruption).
|DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION|
|Oral: The tablets may be chewed, swallowed or crushed and they should be taken with food.
Usual Doses in helminths: Adults & children above 2 years: 400 mg albendazole (1 tablet or 10 ml suspension) as a single dose.
Children between 1-2 years: 200 mg albendazole (5 ml suspension) as a single dose. Treatment may be repeated in three weeks in patients who are heavily infected with helminths.
Giardiasis: Children above 2 years: 400 mg of albendazole once daily for 5 days.
Hydatid disease: Adult and adolescent: 400 mg twice daily for 28 days. Treatment may be repeated as necessary up to two or three cycles.
Children above 6 years: 10 to 15 mg/kg/day for 28 days. Treatment may be repeated as necessary.
Children up to 6 years of age: Dosage has not been established.
Neurocysticercosis: Adult and children: 15 mg/kg/day for 30 days. Treatment may be repeated as necessary.
Strongyloidiasis: Adults and children above 2 years: 400 mg once daily for 3 days.
Children up to 2 years of age: 200 mg once daily for 3 days. Treatment may be repeated after 3 weeks if necessary.
Cutaneous larva migrans: Adult and adolescent: 400 mg once a day for 3 days.
Children: 5 mg/kg/day for 3 days.
